From my email inbox this morning...

Jeff, Anyway we could add to Jcapper a way to use a horses name in a udm, so it would flag him when he runs back? I don't really need to use it for a query in the data window, just to flag horses that I feel will run big next time for some reason or another. What do you think,

Bill

Glendale, AZ

My reply:

Hey Bill,

I really LIKE the idea. Can conceivably add a factor to the UDM Wizard called something like "Watchlist." The way it would work is that the user pulls up the UDM Wizard and selects Watchlist from the factors drop down, clicks the Test Box, and then keys in a name match for the horse he or she wants to watch for going fwd and hits the Save button. Names of multiple horses could be separated with dash characters. On race day the Profile Marker compares the name of the horse from the data file being processed against any Watchlist names sitting in the XML for active UDMs and whenever a name match is found the horse is marked by the UDM being evaluated. The user could also key something into the BettingInstructions field to indicate why the horse is being watched... something like "blocked str BEL063009R5" would be enough info I think... absolutely workable idea...

But... it's going to cost you.

You may or may not be aware but there's been a management shakeup at Yavapai Downs. Greg Wry has been rehired as both track announcer AND director of racing. His boss, the GM, Gary Striker, has invited HANA to do a day at the races - date to be determined. Looks like I'll be headed to AZ sometime before the end of their meet. There'll be a Sat or Sun where HANA members in AZ get free clubhouse admission at YAV. While there, in addition to doing a member sign up drive - I'll be meeting with track management from YAV and TUP as well as key decision makers from the AZ horsemen, both faculty and students from the U of A Racetrack Industry Program, and (hopefully) members of the AZ Racing Commission. My goal will be to get everybody on the same page... I want to plant the seed that AZ's ADW law and 20 pct WPS takeouts make it impossible for racing in AZ to compete against other forms of gambling such as slots and poker. The only way things are ever going to change is if the racing industry in AZ makes a concerted effort to get the law changed AND the takeout reduced.

Without needed change YAV is in real jeopardy of being gone in 2-3 years... with TUP being in danger 2-3 years beyond that as more and more players either die off or migrate to slots and poker for their gaming fix.

I said it was going to cost you...

I was looking at the HANA member database and I didn't see your name as a HANA member.

Tell you what...

I'll add Watchlist as a JCapper factor but I need you to head over to http://www.horseplayersassociation.com and sign up as a HANA member. Then I want you to pass on the url to some of the guys you exchange handicapping ideas with via email and maybe even some of the guys you sit down next to whenever you show up at TUP.

I want to get the racing industry in AZ involved behind a grass roots campaign to get the ADW law changed. And right now as I type this there are only 26 HANA members who reside in AZ. By the end of this summer I'll need to have added several hundred if we are to have ANY chance of convincing state lawmakers and regulators to effect change in the one state where it's needed the most.

Couldn't resist asking,

Bill

Bill, it should be in the next program update... along with some other new stuff.

New Behaviors for UPR Tools

Add Subtract based on factor numeric value.
Allows you to add or subtract points based on ranges that you define for numeric factor values. Allows for each factor being evaluated to be individually weighted as well. Consider this an addendum to existing behaviors that allow for points to be added or subtracted based on factor rank.

AVG factor numeric value
Now you can create weighted averages of factor numeric values. This truly allows you to create your own factors. Simple example: Create UserFactors that look something like this:

UserFactor = [(PMI x 1.25) + (CompoundLate x .75)] / 2

Distance Cycle
Behaves exactly like Form Cycle and Speed Cycle but the evaluation is based on Sprint or Route. Allows writing UDMs to capture patterns like route today with the past 3 starts leading up to today being SPRINT ROUTE SPRINT or SPRINT ROUTE ROUTE, etc.

WatchList
Write UDMs to flag horses by name of horse. Create your own "watch list" of horses you want to bet back next time out based on your own trip notes... checked, wide, blocked, galloped out strongly, etc.

Month
Now you can flag UDMs by Month. Many different uses here. For example, KEE spring meet vs KEE fall meet... MNR winterized track vs MNR normal track... use with a sire list to flag 3 yr olds of individual sires likely to mature (and improve) during certain months of the year... combined with WatchList you can do this for individual horses if you know the month they were foaled.

Finish Position (Official)
Data Window Only - Allows you to perform R&D to handicap for 2nd... or 3rd... or horses likely to round out the bottom of a super... or find horses where almost all the starters selected by the UDM are off the board.

HorseType Color Coding
HorseType is now color coded on the HTML Report:
Brown = dirt
Green = turf
Blue = Synthetic
Makes it easier to see at a glance that's all.

ETA sometime tomorrow.
